Tip Of The Month
Talking To Your Kids About Alcohol and Drugs
January 2009
*Have a conversation NOT a confrontation
*Show Concern: Express to your child that you are worried
*Keep a Cool Head: Do NOT focus on what your child has done, impress upon them what you want them to do
*Be Direct: Clearly state your concerns (ex. “You’re not showering, your grades have dropped, and I found beer cans in your car”)
*Listen: Don’t do all the talking and when your child speaks listen to what they have to say
*Hold off until he/she is sober: if you suspect your child is drunk/high do not start a conversation with them wait until they are sober
