Tip Of The Month
Love and Limits
December 2008
Setting Limits:
Reduce Boredom: Children often get into trouble or do things they normally wouldn’t when they are bored. By involving them in an activity they enjoy, children will be more likely to redirect their energy.
Set Expectations: Children are more likely to follow instructions that are stated simply and direct. After you have given your child the instructions, show them the behavior you are expecting.
Offer a choice between two alternatives: “It’s time to clear the table do you want to clear your cup or your plate first?” This allows the child a choice and the child will be more likely to complete the tasks you have assigned them.
Demonstrate Behavior: Children learn by watching the behaviors of others. If they see appropriate behavior they will act appropriately.
Check the Basics: When a child is tired, hungry, or sick they will not behave the way you expect them too, and discipline may not be as necessary as a nap or snack .
